Argus
NMK (Jaleco license) • 1986

Argus is a two-player vertical scrolling shooter released in 1986 by NMK under license from Jaleco. Players pilot a ship presented centrally on screen, navigating through increasingly challenging levels while the ground scrolls in the opposite direction of movement—allowing for continuous looping across the game's landscape. The gameplay builds upon familiar shooting mechanics but introduces novel elements like floating maze walls that can be optionally traversed and targets requiring multiple hits to reveal power-ups or special weapons. Each stage culminates in a boss battle, where players must identify and strike a fleeting weak point before time runs out. Following each successful boss encounter, a landing sequence tests player precision for bonus points. The ship also cycles through five distinct weapon combinations as the game progresses, providing varied offensive options to combat the rising enemy forces. Argus features sixteen levels, with the final four repeating indefinitely as players strive for a high score. Driven by Zilog Z80 processors and an YM2203 sound chip, this cooperative shooter offers a unique twist on the established vertical scrolling genre.
