Sidewinder is a two-player vertical scrolling shooter released by Arcadia Systems in 1988. Players control aircraft battling through waves of enemies in an attempt to achieve their mission objectives. The game utilizes an 8-way joystick and two buttons for directional movement and firing weaponry, demanding precision as players navigate the onscreen action. Developed by Synergistic Software, Sidewinder features graphics driven by Arcadia hardware and sound generated by a custom chip. The gameplay involves constant maneuvering to avoid enemy fire while simultaneously engaging targets. Two players can cooperate in their efforts or compete against one another for the highest score. The game’s visuals are brought to life through artwork by Jonathan Sposato, and incorporates contributions from several other individuals involved in its development. Sidewinder runs on Arcadia System hardware powered by a Motorola 68000 processor and custom sound chip. Released as part of the Arcadia Super Select board series, it offered players a challenging cooperative or competitive flying experience.
