Art of Fighting / Ryuuko no Ken (NGM-044 ~ NGH-044)
SNK • 1992

Art of Fighting introduces a unique martial arts experience to the Neo-Geo arcade scene. Players choose from two characters initially – Ryo Sakazaki and Robert Garcia – with additional fighters unlocking through gameplay. The action unfolds across varied environments as players execute punches, kicks, throws, and taunts against opponents, culminating in battles against a formidable boss character. A distinctive visual feature is the progressive damage system that displays visible injuries on each fighter’s face throughout a match, adding to the intensity of the conflict. The game utilizes a “spirit meter” mechanic—special moves consume this meter, leaving players vulnerable while it recharges – and introduces a dynamic camera zoom that adjusts based on character proximity. SNK's second fighting game franchise features character designs from Shinkiro, who would later work on Fatal Fury and King of Fighters. Players can also utilize delayed command inputs to surprise opponents with strategic move timing. The title translates from Japanese as "Dragon and Tiger Fist," reflecting the martial arts theme and featuring a roster inspired by real-world figures like Steven Seagal and Masutatsu Oyama. Subsequent entries in the series include Ryuuko no Ken 2 and Art of Fighting - Ryuuko no Ken Gaiden.
