Amidar
Konami • 1982

Amidar challenges players to systematically color in intricate maze layouts while evading patrolling enemies. As either a gorilla collecting coconuts or a paint roller filling edges, your goal is to complete each rectangular section of the screen to earn points and progress through increasingly complex levels. A limited number of “jumps” provide brief respites from the pursuing Amidars, allowing for strategic escapes and quick clearing of areas – though overuse can leave you vulnerable. Unique gameplay elements distinguish odd and even-numbered stages; on the gorilla levels, rapid coconut collection is key, while the paint roller levels introduce a resource management element where straying too far from completed sections depletes your paint supply and requires backtracking. Filling in all four corner rectangles grants temporary invincibility, enabling you to eliminate enemies for bonus points – though these adversaries quickly recover. Between stages, players face a mini-game involving guiding an Amidar across the screen to collect bananas for a significant point reward. With two player support, Amidar delivers a uniquely engaging and strategic arcade experience rooted in simple mechanics and demanding precision.
