Gameplay

Tecfri’s Ambush, released in 1983, is a cooperative two-player shooter game that challenges players to pilot spaceships through an increasingly hostile environment. Gameplay begins with a unique mechanic – repeatedly pressing the joystick left and right to initiate your spacecraft's launch sequence. Once airborne, you must work together to fend off waves of approaching enemy vessels in a chase-view perspective. The game’s design marks it as an early example of the shoot 'em up genre. Featuring programming by Javier Valero, Josep Quingles, and Luis Jonama, Ambush utilizes a Zilog Z80 processor and General Instrument AY8910 sound chips to deliver its gameplay experience. Originally developed in Barcelona, Spain, Tecfri licensed Ambush for distribution in Japan and elsewhere. A high score of 591,150 points was achieved by Alberto Zin on July 9, 1984, demonstrating the game’s potential for skilled players. Utilizing an eight-way joystick and two buttons, Ambush offers a straightforward but engaging experience for those seeking a retro arcade challenge.
