Alien Arena
Duncan Brown • 1985

In Alien Arena, two players compete in a strategic maze game where capturing your opponent’s flag while protecting your own is key to victory. As either Thor or Zespar, you navigate a divided arena, gathering colored pieces to assemble offensive and defensive objects. These creations can be strategically placed to hinder your rival or provide an advantage – but be warned, incomplete objects must be discarded if you change your mind! A timed game encourages quick thinking and decisive action, with the ability to extend play by adding more credits. The gameplay involves a unique blend of collection and territory control; each round begins with a tense delay as flags are randomly placed and a central barrier remains in place, allowing players time to prepare their defenses or launch an initial assault. Once the action starts, quick reflexes and clever object placement are essential for success. Should time run out, the game transitions into a single-player mode where the victor continues battling the computer opponent. Alien Arena is an exceptionally rare find, originally created by Duncan Brown on custom hardware in 1985 as part of what was intended to be a user-friendly conversion kit. Though not widely embraced initially, its unique mechanics and limited production run make it a fascinating glimpse into arcade game development history.
