Gameplay

Akka Arrh is a single-player shooter from Atari released in 1982. Players control a spaceship positioned at the center of the screen using a trackball to direct a targeting cursor representing the ship’s weapon systems. A unique feature allows players to zoom in on the immediate area surrounding their vessel, offering a more detailed view for precision aiming and tactical maneuvering against approaching enemies. Originally titled "Target Outpost," this prototype game was designed with considerable attention to its presentation. Unlike many test versions that utilize repurposed cabinets and basic artwork, Akka Arrh featured a custom cabinet design including a distinctive tubular marquee and chase lights around the monitor – hallmarks of Atari’s standard production quality. The name itself is a playful acronym honoring programmers Dave Ralston and Mike Hally. Due to complexities deemed challenging for casual players during market testing, Akka Arrh never progressed beyond prototype status. Only two known units remain today, making it a rare artifact in the history of arcade gaming; its presence can also be found as an easter egg within the high score screen of another Atari title, Cyberball 2072.
