Air Assault (World)
Irem • 1993
Also known as: Fire Barrel

Take to the skies in Air Assault, a two-player vertical scrolling shooter from Irem released in 1993. As pilots defending against an unseen threat, players maneuver their aircraft through increasingly challenging levels filled with enemy formations and obstacles. The game presents a cooperative experience where teamwork is essential to survive waves of attacks and progress deeper into the hostile environment. This version of Air Assault represents an export release developed in Japan, building upon the foundation of Irem’s earlier title, “Fire Barrel.” While sharing core gameplay elements with its predecessor, this iteration introduces unique weaponry, enemy designs, and a revised color palette to distinguish it visually. Players will need to adapt their strategies as they encounter these new challenges within the game's vertical scrolling stages. The cooperative action allows for shared screen space and coordinated attacks against the encroaching forces. Released in February of 1994, Air Assault delivers a classic shmup experience with an updated presentation.
