Acrobat Mission
UPL (Taito license) • 1991

In Acrobat Mission, players take on the roles of elite fighter pilots in a desperate defense of Mars against an unknown alien invasion. Set in the year 2100 after humanity’s departure from Earth, you control either Jet, a male pilot, or Nova, a female pilot, each piloting the advanced Icarus spacecraft. As a two-player cooperative experience, you navigate through vertically scrolling environments engaging enemy forces in intense dogfights to repel the invaders and protect the Martian colony. The Icarus is equipped with a standard laser as its base weapon, but pilots can acquire additional firepower including a wide shot that spreads energy outwards and a Hurricane shot which fires clusters of rotating projectiles. Charging the fire button unleashes powerful special attacks, while two smart bombs offer a last-ditch effort to clear the screen. A unique mechanic allows the Icarus to bounce harmlessly off obstacles, but repeated enemy fire will deplete its shield before resulting in a temporary loss of control and potential explosion. The game’s name reflects the demanding maneuvers required to overcome the invaders; the pilots must push their skills and technology beyond established limits to succeed in this critical mission.
