Gameplay

Step up to the plate with Atari Baseball, released in 1979 and offering a unique take on America's pastime. Two players face off, each controlling aspects of both offense and defense through an innovative trackball control system. This allows for precise movement of runners, outfielders, and pitch direction, aiming for realistic baseball action and player involvement. Gameplay revolves around selecting from four different hitting plays and pitches to create diverse game challenges. Players use the trackball to guide their actions during each play, maneuvering players strategically across the field. An optional coin-operated add-on allows for extended games beyond the initial innings. Built on Atari Football hardware, this title featured a distinctive stand-up cabinet design intended for varied locations and utilized a large 4.5-inch trackball common to other popular Atari sports titles of the era. Originally intended to include digitized voice commentary from the umpire, that feature was ultimately cut during development.
