Gameplay

Piloting jetpack-equipped warriors through unusual landscapes, 4-D Warriors is a cooperative shooting game for two players released in 1985 by Coreland and published by Sega. The gameplay unfolds as a horizontally scrolling shooter where players navigate parallel universes accessible by flying above the traditional playfield boundary. Enemies appear across these dimensional shifts, requiring strategic coordination to overcome before confronting boss creatures. Wormholes occasionally open during gameplay, transporting players to even more surreal environments, adding an element of unpredictability to their journey. The game utilizes Sega’s “System 1” hardware and controlled by a four-way joystick and two buttons per player. While the visuals are striking, early versions of the game contained unused sprite artwork that never made it into the final release. Developed by Coreland and featuring contributions from Rabinia H, Miyao, Sanpei, and T. Iga, 4-D Warriors presents a unique twist on the classic side-scrolling shooter genre with its dimensional mechanics and cooperative gameplay.
