Taito’s Forty-Love is a two-player tennis game released in Japan in early 1985. Players use four-way joysticks to control their characters across the court, returning serves and attempting to score points by hitting the ball past their opponent's racket. The game features simple controls and straightforward gameplay focused on volleying and strategic placement of shots. The arcade cabinet utilizes a multi-board system incorporating specialized circuitry for video display, sound generation, and game logic. A palette of 256 colors renders the action across a horizontal screen resolution of 256 x 224 pixels at a refresh rate of 60Hz. The machine’s technical design includes processors from NEC and Motorola, along with chips from Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, Yamaha, and OKI to manage graphics, audio, and gameplay elements. Forty-Love provides a classic arcade tennis experience built around quick reflexes and competitive head-to-head play for two participants.
