Gameplay

Pilots take to the skies in 1942 (Revision B), a thrilling vertical scrolling shooter set during World War II’s Pacific campaign. As the ‘Super Ace,’ players battle through waves of enemy aircraft while dodging incoming fire and attempting to reach Tokyo. A unique feature of this game is its reversed level progression; stages begin at 32 and count down to 1, each representing a different location in the Pacific theatre like Midway, Iwojima, and Okinawa. Two players can team up for cooperative action, maneuvering their planes with an eight-way joystick to destroy enemy formations while collecting power-ups that grant increased firepower, smart bombs, or wingmen assistance. Successfully clearing red plane waves awards these bonuses, helping overcome increasingly challenging encounters. The game challenges players to master evasive maneuvers like loop-the-loops and strategic use of the available power-ups to survive a relentless assault. Upon completing all stages, players are greeted with a congratulatory message and a substantial bonus score before the final "GAME OVER" screen appears, signaling Capcom's hope for future titles. Scoring is key to achieving high rankings on the leaderboard, which features unusual placeholder names like “EXEDEXES” and “VULGUS,” rewarding skillful play through bonuses for percentage of enemies destroyed and unused evasion maneuvers.
